Furthermore, “Text 2” also raises the issue that all women have to look a certain way in society to appeal to the opposite sex. For example the main female protagonist in the text is portrayed to be a young looking attractive girl who does seem to attract a lot of the because of her physical beauty. Hence, this also suggests the idea that many teenage girls in society are keen on the way they look and aspire to be like models or celebrities that they see in different media texts such as magazines. This also conforms to the theory of “The male gaze” established by Laura Mulvey as she argues that women have the quality to-be-looked-at-ness making them feeble and inferior whilst the male is more active dominating and controlling. This is made evident in the text as the whole attention is mainly on this girl.

Similarly, this negative portrayal of women is also established in “Text 2” as women are again pictured to be weak, whilst the males are pictured to be more powerful. For example in the text the audience see the typical stereotypical view of a housewife who is portrayed to be in a kitchen. Therefore this can suggest the idea that we are still living in a patriarchal society, where males are more dominant.

However this representation of women can also be looked at from another perspective because the civil rights act that was signed in 1964 gave equality to citizens in society e.g. women were given the right to vote and black people were no longer seen as a different race or class. Therefore this can sends a message out to the audience that to an extent society in a way is changing as women can be seen to be equal to men. This equality can also be seen in the “Text 2” as a black male character is given the role of being a doctor, hence having a lot of authority.
