Module 1...
Film poster- Scream 3
  • Media langauge- The background colour of the film poster is very dark and grey. It sends a message out to the audience that the film is going to be mysterious.
  • The main image is of the letter 3 with an eye in the middle which is placed in the middle of the page.
  • The rest of the poster is in black(having connotations of death) however this colour tone is juxtaposed as the lighting in the number 3 is very bright. This is very significant as the audience know this is the third making of the film.
  • In the image of the number 3 we see another image of an eye a quater of a human beings face. This again sends a message out to the audience that the film is going to be mysterious.
  • This also raises certain enigmas in the audiences mind as they would want to find out why there is only a quater of a face being represented.
  • Therefore this would enable the audience to go and watch the film which is the main purpose of a film poster.
  • The genre of the film can be placed under the genre of horror or thriller.
  • This is very evident as the image of the eye does look distressed and under pain.
  • The use of dark mysterious colours can also be a suggestion of the film being a thriller one.
  • The image of the eye can aslo be used as an iconographic symbol as this symbol is evident in other thriller movies.
  • The main image at the bottom of the poster is of the scream mask which was used on the first few movies.
  • The mask has connotations of death and is a very strange symbol- again causing enigmas.
  • "coming soon"- used in almost every film poster. Therefore this can be seen as a typical convention of a film poster.
  • The juxtaposition of the colours black(death) and white(freedom, happiness and purity) can suggest that people in the film did have happy and free lives, however this was put to threat by the use of a murderer.
  • The font of the letters "scream 3" set out in a mysterious way.
  • There is more emphasis placed on the letter "m" which can suggest that the film is going to be about murder.
Dvd cover- the film cars(2006).
  • The colours used on the front dvd cover are very bright and attarctive. This is important as the main target audience for the film is children. Therefore the use of bright colours will appeal to them in many ways as they stand out.
  • The title of the movie is aslo placed in a large font that stands out. This is important and significant as the media text is a dvd cover.
  • The colous of the title is in red which has connotations of passion and action.
  • By the fact that the colour of the title is red can suggest that idea that the main primary audience for the text are boys that are aged between 6-10 years of age.
  • The main image is of a car that is placed in the middle of the page. This is sifnificant as it can be used as a iconographic symbol suggesting that the genre of the film is about cars.
  • The animated expression of the car is a happy one. This suggests the idea that young boys will find it easier to engage into the text.
  • Certain images of different coloured cars are placed next to each other in the top left hand corner. This can connote the film is going to be about action.
  • The brand name is "Disney" which is regognised at the top of the title. Therefore we as the audience know that the dvd is targeted towards children in the market. Also the fact that disney produce animated films.
  • The typical conventions of a front dvd cover are also noticable- the use of a PG symbol suggests that the movie is safe for children to watch.
  • There is also a symbol of the letters dvd.
  • The use of a title, colourful background, and large images are typical of a dvd cover.

Module 1 practice....
cosmo girl-magazine analysis:

  • The title of the magazine"cosmo girl" is in large bold letters. The colour of the title is in pink which reinforces the idea that the magazine is targetd towards women in the market.
  • Pink has connotataions of love and romave and aslo femininity.
  • The use of close up shot of Mischa Barton empahsise her facial expressions. She is looking directly towards the audience which is very appealing as they stand out. Therefore the audience are more engaged into buying the magazine.
  • By the fact the the magazine features a celebrity that is popular within the teenage market signifies many teenage girls will aspire to look like her as she is attractive and slim- forces ideologies on women as they shold all look like this, especially teenage girls.
  • comforms to the theory of the male gaze(mulvey) as women can be seen as sexual objects and are there to be looked at.
  • The background colour of the magazine is blue and attarctive which has connotations of happiness, freedom and purity.
  • The genre of the magazine can be put under the teenage segment. This is also a mainstream magazine that is well regognised in the market.
