Furthermore, “Text 2” also raises the issue that all women have to look a certain way in society to appeal to the opposite sex. For example the main female protagonist in the text is portrayed to be a young looking attractive girl who does seem to attract a lot of the because of her physical beauty. Hence, this also suggests the idea that many teenage girls in society are keen on the way they look and aspire to be like models or celebrities that they see in different media texts such as magazines. This also conforms to the theory of “The male gaze” established by Laura Mulvey as she argues that women have the quality to-be-looked-at-ness making them feeble and inferior whilst the male is more active dominating and controlling. This is made evident in the text as the whole attention is mainly on this girl.

Similarly, this negative portrayal of women is also established in “Text 2” as women are again pictured to be weak, whilst the males are pictured to be more powerful. For example in the text the audience see the typical stereotypical view of a housewife who is portrayed to be in a kitchen. Therefore this can suggest the idea that we are still living in a patriarchal society, where males are more dominant.

However this representation of women can also be looked at from another perspective because the civil rights act that was signed in 1964 gave equality to citizens in society e.g. women were given the right to vote and black people were no longer seen as a different race or class. Therefore this can sends a message out to the audience that to an extent society in a way is changing as women can be seen to be equal to men. This equality can also be seen in the “Text 2” as a black male character is given the role of being a doctor, hence having a lot of authority.

Virgin Media to back Big Brother...
Summary:
Basically, Virgin Media has been confirmed as the sponsor of Big Brother 8 with the company's mobile arm to be the main service promoted. Channel 4 has still not announced that there will be a big brother 8, in 2008 however virgin mobile still want to sponsor the show even though other sponsorships such as carphone warehouse pulled out of its £2.5m a year sponsorship of Big Brother following the Shilpa Shetty racism row in January. The big brother sponsorship package includes branding and different advertsing opportunites such as radio and televsion.
My View:
Personally, i think that Virgin mobile cant go worng with this offer becasue it will boost their recognition and more people will become more aware of what they are offering to their customers. Many viewers who watch big brother are mainly youngsters and young adults who will probabaly own a mobile phone and are into texting etc...As big brother is such a controversial show and is popular amongst its target market it is evident that virgin will be making alot of profit as they will be advertising through many different sources such as radio, the internet and tv.

Blue Peter phone-in received 14,000 calls...
Summary:
14,000 calls were made to Blue Peter, that faked the competition winner as the phone lines had failed due to a tachnical erorr.the producers of the programme asked a girl who had already visited the studio to phone the programme when the competition was due to be aired with the correct answer. Therefore she was announced the competition winner. Certain members of the team stated that it was a error made by the staff and they had not fixed any of their other competitions. The BBC said the technical breakdown was due to an "unavoidable technical difficulty. It was created by our need to handle all the calls very quickly to find a winner before the end of the programme.
My view:
Basically, I think that most of these television shows where the audience get a chance to vote for theri winner are fixed and are a waste of money as we dont actually know where the money is going, or if the votes were a fix due to errors in technology as Blue peter state. This has also affected alot of other tv programmes such as the "x factor" as ITV charged voters a higher price when theyr were voting for theri winner. Other programmes which have also been suspended by using interactive services are "Im a celebrity" and "soapstar superstar".

Using the comparison of these two texts as your starting point, explore the media issues and debates which they raise.
In your answer you will need to address:
· Key concepts.
· Contextual factors(wider contexts)
· Media theory.

The text “Your Revolution” (1998), by Dj Vadim ft Sarah Jones can be viewed as a feminist text as it raises certain issues such as female empowerment and the idea of a female evolution. However the text “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised”(1972), by Gil Scott-Heron can be viewed in a completely different way as the main issue being raised in this text is that we as the audience are being brainwashed by the media and also suggests the idea that more black people should be treated equally, hence a black evolution.

In the text “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised”, Gill Scott- Heron argues that advertising is a way of brainwashing people that the media are targeting. The main issue that he is trying to raise is that if you buy these certain products that advertisers are selling on television or even in magazines, these products will not make you look better. For example in his rap song he quotes, “The revolution will not get rid of nubs; the revolution will not make you look five pounds thinner”. Therefore this explains that in a way advertising does promote certain anxieties amongst certain groups of people. Hence women in particular will buy a certain product as it will make them look and fell better to attract the opposite sex. Therefore Heron is questioning advertising as we are being overpowered by the media.

Furthermore he is also arguing against the “Uses and gratifications” theory as the theory states that the audience are more active when consuming different media texts and the audience make their own choices about how and when they consume media texts. However it is made evident that Heron is arguing against this as the media is dominating society and promotes false values and ideologies that the audience perceive and accept.

Similarly, “You Revolution”, also raises the same type of issue as women portrayed in rap music videos are very materialistic. For example in her song it quotes, “The real revolution ain’t about bootie size, the versaces you buy, or the Lexus you drives.” Therefore this suggests that Jones is raising the issue that women in society are represented to be very materialistic and dependent on the way people view them. They are forced into believing that if you buy a certain product this will make you image much better. Hence Jones could be sending message out to the audience that you don’t have to be materialistic in order to get you somewhere in life.

Furthermore this issue raised in her song can also link to the “Effects theory” that states the audience are being manipulated. The hypodermic needle further reinforces the effects of the mass media on their audiences. The model demonstrates that the media injects the passive audience with ideologies that they immediately accept as they think this will tend to portray them with a “better” image in society.

In the text “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised”, Gill Scott Heron also argues that black people in the media are depicted as criminals to society and also raises the issue that there are a lot of negative representations of black people in particular in the media. For example in the song he quotes, “Or trying to slide that colour TV into a stolen ambulance.” Therefore this explains that one of the main issues being raised in the text is the negative representation of black people as the media can be seen as a from of propaganda that is against all black people in society. This can also link to the civil rights struggle that many black people were going through in America in the time period of 1972. In society they were not treated as equal citizens and a lot of social inequality was taking place mainly because of discrimination within society.

On the other hand in the text “Your Revolution”, Jones raises the issue about the negative stereotypes of women in society and how the media objectifies women into sexual objects. The main line which is repeated throughout the song is “Your revolution will not happen between these thighs” which suggests that females in society should not be used for sex and that women are still viewed as second class citizens. This also links to the fact of living in a patriarchal society where males have more dominance and control over females which is made evident throughout this song. Hence and Jones is sending a message out to the audience that this should change asking for more female empowerment.

Jone’s also raises the issue of how certain rap songs again objectify women into being sexual objects. She uses certain pastiche texts and mocks them in a way to indicate women should be treated more equally to men. For example she quotes, “Your revolution will not make you feel bombastic and really fantastic.” Hence this explains that she is protesting against women being used for sex and can be raising the issue of a female evolution as they should not let men have more power and control over them.

The text “Your Revolution Will Not Be Televised” raises an issue about how white people in society have more dominance and control over black people, suggesting the idea that white people are excluding certain minorities. For example in the song Heron quotes, “There will b no pictures of pigs shooting down brothers in the instant replay.” Therefore this suggests that the “pigs” are the police and the “brothers” are the black people in society. Heron could be sending a message out to the audience that after the revolution this will not be happening as black people will achieve more power and live in a more equal society.
Furthermore this can also link to Gramsci’s theory of hegemony that states the dominance of one group (in this case white people) over other groups which result in the empowerment of certain cultural beliefs and values.

In conclusion both texts analysed above deal with media issues and debates in different ways. “Your Revolution” (1998), argues for more independence for women in society and questions the idea of living in a patriarchal society. However on the other hand “Your Revolution Will Not Be Televised” (1972), raises the issue of more power for black people and how advertising in general does brainwash the way in which people think.

News values...
Gatlung and rouge outlined the first list list of news values in 1965. They suggested that the selection of news for newspapers and for news broadcasts is done by appliaction of these news values by gatekeeping who control the news we recieve:
News values:
The news values which i consider to be the most important and why:
  • Threshold- The event has to be big enough to make it into big news
  • Meaningfulnesss- The event has to have a meaning that will target and engage the reader.
  • unexprectedness- unpredictable events also engage the audience as it is a new story that has hit the headline.
  • Consonance- The event has to match the audiences exprectations in order for them to stay remained throughout the text.

Examples:

The Daily mail newspaper:

  • Threshold- the main big event which is in the paper and also on the front page is of prince charles and the fact that he wants to ban big macs. This story is big enough to have made it into the news.
  • Unexpectedness- "a baby tht has come back from the dead" after he suffered from a herat attack with no brain damage caused.
  • Reference to elite persons- Mainly prince charles and his family- several members of his family are regular customers of mcdonalds.
  • Personalisation- Again prince charles is the main person in the newspaper who has done most of the action of the event.
  • Continuity- The husband of murdered Nisha Patel has been questioned about her death. This event has been coverd from last yearas she died least year and the police have now charged her husband and can keep him in prison for 24 hours.

Checkpoint:

What is gatekeeping?

Gatekeeping is the editing of a newspaper. The gatekeepers are primarily responsible and are the editors who select and order news broadcasts or select and plan the newspaper layout. They only allow particular items into the news text and this selection will depend pn factors such as the application of news valuses, audience expectaions and institutional requirements.

Checkpoint:

What do we mean by bias?

Bias is a one sided point of view which can be influenced by the attitudes and background of its interviewers, writers, photographers and editors.

Cult of the celebrity...
Action point:
I consume alot of magazines such as "Hello" and "ok" which can be considered as celebrity driven media mainly to find out about the latest gossip that is happening. I also consume tabloid newspapers on a weekly basis such as the sun and reat the soft news stories to find out about the latest celebrity ongoings. Therefore i mainly consume these texts in spite of the celebrity focus, however i aslo consume these texts as a form of escapism when i have nothing else to do.
Exam question:
The sun newspaper:
  • A large image of Britney spears is presented to the reader on the front page. Therefore this gives the reader an insight of what the min story of the paper is about.
  • By the fact that this is the largest image on the tabloid newspaper sends a message out to the audience that this is the most important story in the paper.
  • This story is also part of the newspaper as it is soft news.
  • A large font is used to stand out to the reader and engaag them to read the story.
  • The main headline of the story- "Britney spears has gone bold".
  • Other soft news stories are also presented in the paper such as "daniel gets dumped by teddy".
  • Large images are mainly used of the celebrites to stand out to the reader and less detailed writing is used.

Action point:

A paparazzi photographer is a person ho follows or even stalks celebrites and takes pictures to place in different types of media such as newspapers and magazines.

Module 1...
Film poster- Scream 3
  • Media langauge- The background colour of the film poster is very dark and grey. It sends a message out to the audience that the film is going to be mysterious.
  • The main image is of the letter 3 with an eye in the middle which is placed in the middle of the page.
  • The rest of the poster is in black(having connotations of death) however this colour tone is juxtaposed as the lighting in the number 3 is very bright. This is very significant as the audience know this is the third making of the film.
  • In the image of the number 3 we see another image of an eye a quater of a human beings face. This again sends a message out to the audience that the film is going to be mysterious.
  • This also raises certain enigmas in the audiences mind as they would want to find out why there is only a quater of a face being represented.
  • Therefore this would enable the audience to go and watch the film which is the main purpose of a film poster.
  • The genre of the film can be placed under the genre of horror or thriller.
  • This is very evident as the image of the eye does look distressed and under pain.
  • The use of dark mysterious colours can also be a suggestion of the film being a thriller one.
  • The image of the eye can aslo be used as an iconographic symbol as this symbol is evident in other thriller movies.
  • The main image at the bottom of the poster is of the scream mask which was used on the first few movies.
  • The mask has connotations of death and is a very strange symbol- again causing enigmas.
  • "coming soon"- used in almost every film poster. Therefore this can be seen as a typical convention of a film poster.
  • The juxtaposition of the colours black(death) and white(freedom, happiness and purity) can suggest that people in the film did have happy and free lives, however this was put to threat by the use of a murderer.
  • The font of the letters "scream 3" set out in a mysterious way.
  • There is more emphasis placed on the letter "m" which can suggest that the film is going to be about murder.
Dvd cover- the film cars(2006).
  • The colours used on the front dvd cover are very bright and attarctive. This is important as the main target audience for the film is children. Therefore the use of bright colours will appeal to them in many ways as they stand out.
  • The title of the movie is aslo placed in a large font that stands out. This is important and significant as the media text is a dvd cover.
  • The colous of the title is in red which has connotations of passion and action.
  • By the fact that the colour of the title is red can suggest that idea that the main primary audience for the text are boys that are aged between 6-10 years of age.
  • The main image is of a car that is placed in the middle of the page. This is sifnificant as it can be used as a iconographic symbol suggesting that the genre of the film is about cars.
  • The animated expression of the car is a happy one. This suggests the idea that young boys will find it easier to engage into the text.
  • Certain images of different coloured cars are placed next to each other in the top left hand corner. This can connote the film is going to be about action.
  • The brand name is "Disney" which is regognised at the top of the title. Therefore we as the audience know that the dvd is targeted towards children in the market. Also the fact that disney produce animated films.
  • The typical conventions of a front dvd cover are also noticable- the use of a PG symbol suggests that the movie is safe for children to watch.
  • There is also a symbol of the letters dvd.
  • The use of a title, colourful background, and large images are typical of a dvd cover.

Module 1 practice....
cosmo girl-magazine analysis:

  • The title of the magazine"cosmo girl" is in large bold letters. The colour of the title is in pink which reinforces the idea that the magazine is targetd towards women in the market.
  • Pink has connotataions of love and romave and aslo femininity.
  • The use of close up shot of Mischa Barton empahsise her facial expressions. She is looking directly towards the audience which is very appealing as they stand out. Therefore the audience are more engaged into buying the magazine.
  • By the fact the the magazine features a celebrity that is popular within the teenage market signifies many teenage girls will aspire to look like her as she is attractive and slim- forces ideologies on women as they shold all look like this, especially teenage girls.
  • comforms to the theory of the male gaze(mulvey) as women can be seen as sexual objects and are there to be looked at.
  • The background colour of the magazine is blue and attarctive which has connotations of happiness, freedom and purity.
  • The genre of the magazine can be put under the teenage segment. This is also a mainstream magazine that is well regognised in the market.
  • The primary target audience for this magazine will be girls who are in their teens and enjoy goiny out, who are into fashion and enjoy heraing about gossip, such as the latest celeb gossip.
  • The cover of the magazine aslo has different taglines placed in big, bold fonts represented across the page. Therefore the reader will be more aware of what the magazine will conatin without looking at the contents page.
  • the image of mischa is placed in the center of the page which reinforces the idea that she is the main theme of the content of the magazine.
  • The image of mischa Barton can also illustarte characteristics of their targeted readers.
  • Mischa is presented to be happy, youhful and full of energy that agian will make women buy the magazine.
  • She is aslo wearing a sassy top which indicates that she has sexual needs and is not afraid to fulfil them. The positioning of her hand indicates she is not afraid to be herself.
  • The magazine can be read as a form of escapism and entertainment that educates and informs the reader at the same time about social issues.
